Why'd you do it?

This may be a weird question but...

Just curious as to why you decided on/purchased the M2. What was it about the car or your circumstances that led you to it? Tell me how you got to 'yes'!

Some of you will laugh but here it is. Turned 30, realized I'm going to have kids in the next 3 to 5 years. Having 2 cars has never been my thing. After some research I narrowed it down to the Audi TTS and BMW M2. Mustangs, Camaros, and Corvettes were never my thing, and the 370z is way too old. Test drove the TTS, and honestly liked it a lot. Wasn't quite as fast as I wanted but was confident with a few mods it would be. I ended up choosing the M2 because it would be much more "special", turbo 6, and could be scary fast. No regrets so far

Always wanted a coupe but just couldn't afford one while in school. When I finished my masters last year I could finally comfortably afford a luxury sports car. I was between the cayman S and the m2.

I've never test driven either but so many things about the m2 just appealed to me - it's aggressive styling, value & performance at its price, practicality while not compromising performance, exhaust sound, and its potential rarity.

I had also never driven a manual before so I decided it was the perfect time to learn :

I have zero regrets. I still haven't stopped looking back at the car every time I park. I actually like going to work even more just so I can drive this gorgeous girl!

Wife had a '07 Mini Cooper S & it was time for something new. We have a 535I M-Sport and liked it so we went to the BMW dealer and looked at cars. The M235I was the right size but was missing something... looks? ... a soul? It's hard to explain. Some more home work revealed the M2 would be coming out in several months. From what I read it had it all. Easy decision .. a tad harder to find a dealer willing to do an ED.

I realised that the M2 is here last winter. I sold my 996 GT3 and bought an X3 as I was about to becoming a dad for the first time!
Immediately fell in love with the design of the M2 and loved that it can come with dct, something I loved from back then when I test drove an E92 M3 but just couldn't afford it!
I test drove the M2 too (wow to all you Americans who ordered the car but never drove it!!) and immediately felt it was behaving like my long sold E46 M3, just a bit better in every way and with dct!!
I hated the clutch and way to shift in the 996 GT3 that is why for me it was sure I am a dct guy!
Will take delivery in March and count every day!!

My first love was a 1970 BMW 2002 that I rebuilt in 1987 and enjoyed for a little more than a year before someone hit me while I was at stop sign. The old chrome bumper crumbled and my Every car I've owned has been a search to replace that car. Toyota Tercel, Sentra SE R, Acura Legend, Chevy Blazer, Acura CL, Infinit G35, 2009 M3 DCT, Focus SVT and, coming soon, M2 6MT.

Several were excellent cars, Sentra SE R was under appreciated for how good it was. The Legend a true gem. Infinity was ruined by an awful dealer service experience and a clutch I never understood. I adored my M3 but it was too much beast to enjoy in normal conditions. Every day it begged for the track. The DCT was quirky and while I appreciated it, it does lose something making it that easy to drive. 145k miles and it was also starting to eat its weight in service costs. The Focus was a car I bought because nothing at the time seemed worth the money. Watching the endless stat wars, I'm disheartened because the M3 taught me that there is enough. The 2002 wasn't beast and didn't win my admiration because it overwhelmed the road. Instead it was a savant; gifted at blending driver and road into a single experience. The M2 promises to sing a similar song where plenty is perfect. BMW has finally found itself stepping away from the stat-race and discovering beauty and the Ultimate Experience is found in balance.

Had my turbo e30 for 4 years and just got tired of always working on it and having to fix something, when I put it up for sale I got an offer and couldn't refuse and with my current lease about to be out of miles i figured I'd just make the jump and order a M2 even though I'd never driven or seen one in person. Plus I lusted over the e46 M3 as a kid and this car looked like a modern version to me.

I wanted an M3 since the E36 & my early 20's. The timing hasn't been right until recently when every obstacle was overcome, and I had dibs on a launch car. All signs said buy this M2 (except my wife ) It is my 1st BMW and is not my DD.

Original plan was to buy an E46 CP garage queen but there are no independent euro garages locally. Drove a DCT E90 but it didn't do it for me. I looked at Cayman S but decided against it because there isn't a local dealer.

My M2 is coming in April but I'd like to participate in this. I'm 57 years old and started driving in 1975. My parents were really cool; we were one of the first families in Los Angeles to start driving BMW's back in the early seventies. My dad had made a TV series pilot in Munich in 1972 that featured a 2002 Tii doing some amazing stunt scenes and he got hooked on BMW right then. As soon as he got back home he started buying them.

My first car was an inka orange 1972 2002 automatic that was originally my mom's car. My dad drove a 1974 2002 Tii, which was given to me around 1977 and became my next car; I kept it until 1985.

Then I bought a 1985 325e, then a 1989 325is, then a 1990 M3, and then a 1999 M Coupe. In 2007, my father gave me his last and favorite car before he passed away, a Dakar 1995 M3, which I sold in 2015 when I bought my M235i. I feel really like I am not allowed to own anything other than BMW's. The M235i and I never really "jelled," shall we say, and I got a lucky chance to drive the M2 at BMW's Performance Center last year and was immediately hooked. That is my story.

its a good question.

I don't really know, but I'm glad I did.

Now my guess. I think I was just ready for a fast sports car. I was looking around, thinking a Vett might be my next sports car, but I just was not enamored with its looks. Same with others in the M2s class. I liked their specs, but the huge front grills of the Audi and Lexus turned me away. I liked the looks of the BMWs. Then I read a couple of articles in several auto magazines about the M2 and it sealed the deal.

Did I contradict myself?

I was looking for a driver's car, coming from a tuned Audi S6 that was awesome in a straight line, easy to drive (practically autopilot) & great for hauling people around. The kids are grown & have their own cars now, and I've really been missing the connection & involvement you get with a small manual car that handles.

My last new car was a 2003 Nissan 350Z which I bought new when they first came out. There was nothing like it out at the time. It served me well. I got the new car itch in 2015 but there was nothing out there that got my attention in the price range of the M2 or lower. M235i seemed like the one but I wasn't sold on the looks. When I learned about the M2 there was no question. Similar to the 350Z, there is nothing available for the price that compares. I knew immediately this was the one so I placed my deposit in November. Got the dealers first demo car last April. As long as it doesn't fall apart and cause problems I'll plan to hold onto it as long as I did the 350Z.

Drove my 135i for 5 years, and it was my favourite of any car I had ever owned (a long list of compromises due to financial circumstance, or non-ideal choices for various reasons... one because the saleswoman had absolutely stunning legs (I was young)). Though I really liked my 135i, in the back of my mind was always a regret from chickening out on the 1M. Had been eyeing the M235i - but it was just not enough of an upgrade to justify the cost. Then the M2 came out... and it was love at first sight! BMW seemed to have ready my mind on where to focus the value... performance over luxury, awesome styling and sound, token rear seats so the whole family can come along (occasionally).

Maybe my last manual (the way the market is going), and perhaps even my last IC engine... so decided to make it a good one

Loving it... with no regrets!!

I bought my M2 almost by chance.
Too long time to get the M2, I ordered a M140i 3d Steptronic in the middle of September to change my Audi RS3 8V.
After one month called the dealer asking to me if I was still interested to buy the M2 because one arrived but the customer that ordered the car was nowhere to be found.
So I said immediately yes, and I got it three day after (with 8% discount on the MRSP). Lucky

I bought a brand new 2001 E46 M3 (6MT, titanium silver, such a beautiful automobile!) and kept it for 14 joyful years. When it came time to trade up, I made the mistake of buying a fully tricked-out M5, including competition package and, alas, DCT. The 2014 M5 was a superb and competent car, but, for me, too big and heavy, and not much fun to drive (I especially didn't like the DCT). After 9 months, I sold it back to the dealer.

I kicked the tires on both the M3 and M4 - on 2 different occassions, in fact. I tried so hard to love them. But, while lighter and somewhat smaller than the M5, neither of these M cars in any way approached the delightful driving feel of my beloved E46 M3 - so small and nimble. And their horrible exhaust notes...

When the M2 burst on the scene, and the first rave reviews came out, I wondered if, at last, there was a worthy successor to the E46 M3. I promptly called my dealer to get on the list (at MSRP, of course). Having driven my LBB 6MT M2 for a few months now, I'm happy to report that it is living up to my expectations. Perfect size, perfect performance, perfect handling, and so damn fun to drive! Hell, I just might keep it for 14 years! -scr

PS I continue to be amazed by the M2's low MSRP. The E46 M3 cost me a lot more, and that was back in 2001.

My story goes something like this. Back in 2000 I wanted to buy a Jeep Cherokee. My dad tried talking me out of it many times. One day he says let's just go to the BMW dealer and let me show you a car. I'm like BMW? They never even entered my mind before. So we went and I looked at an e46 323i. I thought it looked nice so I went back in a few days and ordered one. The rest is history. I keep blaming him now for my addiction to "expensive" cars.

2000 e46 323i
2007 e92 328i
2009 e90 335i
2013 e92 335is
2017 M2 - ordered it yesterday for April delivery

Notice a trend of one upping the previous car?

Can't wait!!!

This will be my seventh BMW. Got hooked with my first E36 but could not afford an M car at the time. My 135 was great, sadly I missed out on the 1M. The recent M3s are just too big so when I heard about the M2 I said it's now or never!

I'm picking the M2 up today in a few hours!!!
