$36k is low. Mid to high forties is more typical. When I bought my GTI 10 months ago, the dealer had an R listed for $51k. It sold.

One thing that is driving me nuts with this little car and its not really the car at all is that you cant run Waze while using Apple Carplay....when I first got the car I tried this and it worked but everytime a voice prompt comes up on Waze it makes the entire head unit reboot. Tried shutting off the voice prompts and it still does it. You guys experience this? I know kind of a dumb place to ask on a BMW forum but this thread has some traction lol

Well a sucker is born everyday. I'm more interested in the price they sold it for than what they listed it for.

I'm in the NYC area and spoke to several dealers on the Golf R. Even when there was a waiting list for them, the most I was ever quoted was MSRP and you're a fool to pay a penny over. With the car out for two years already, I would say you're a fool to pay over MSRP-1k. There are literally a thousand of these cars for sale right now around the country and the market is not too big for this car at this price point. It's not even limited production anymore.

Perhaps but that has little bearing on the car selling for a premium. If a local dealer only has one on the lot...that creates perceived scarcity and it will sell.

The important takeaway here is that $49k is completely off the charts.

The dealers I dealt with had ZERO cars on the lot and were offering MSRP. I'm not sure I even pitty the fool who pays more than $40k because they're just uninformed buyers - and those are NOT in short supply.

The R isnt exactly in short supply

There may not be as many avail as any given trim level of GTI but avail is not so plentiful that dealers cant mess with potential buyers on price

As much as I like the R I will likely end up with a GTI SE in a year or two unless something more interesting comes to the US.....

If you're considering spending 40k on a VW (pure insanity IMHO) then suddenly for 44-45k you're in a whole different class with plenty of other options

The R is a nice car, dont get me wrong but IMHO its still a 32-34k car at MOST.....

The Japanese STI goes for high $30k. You think a niche German sport hatch with premium everything and 300 horses can't command a $40k pricetag? Where do you guys live? Just saying. I recall the OG R32 was flirting with high 30s in 2003/04.

I believe they use to be made in germany for the higher end golfs but not anymore.

One thing i can't stand on my brothers GTi is his taillights. They just look cheap compared to the euro version.

Fun little car but def. has trouble putting the power down unless you get some serious tires.

It's all about perception I guess. Many think Subaru is an Australian brand. Mexico or not...people will tout its German lineage.

All of the GTI's are now sourced and assembled pretty much entirely in Mexico

Yeah the Euro tails have been much nicer on the three most recent generations of the R. Not sure if it's cost-savings or has something to do with some DOT bullshit.
