Track day square setup
I have looked at the Tire Rack track day package and may go that route but as the OCD guy I am I have also looked at other options like the forged wheels from Bimmerworld and the various wheels from Apex. I want to go with a square 265-35-18 setup and have been looking at wheels that are 18x9.5 35et. I believe this setup will work with a stock M2 suspension but I am hoping to get confirmation from someone. The tire rack setup is the same with the exception of an offset of 33 so I assume 35 will work.
Any thoughts from those who are experienced are appreciated. |

Messaged Bimmerworld and they recommend the ET22 setup but state its pretty aggressive and may require camber adjustments which I really want to avoid. I am hoping someone can chime on on if a 35 ET would work. I am no expert but I believe 35 would be considered less aggressive and not require a camber adjustment. My car is a daily otherwise I wouldn't be against going with a camber adjustment.

After driving my M2 for 250 miles, not even pushing it in any way of course. I can feel the car turns in so much more easily than my 335is. If you are not completely sure why are wanting a square setup, aside from Tire Rack recommending it, I would not make the change. If you are referring to track as in Auto-X a square setup will help, for HPDE at real tracks, I would not make the change. This car does not have the problems cars in past have had related to turn-in and balance. There are also reasons why pretty much every form of auto racing does not run a square setup.

isjoey is correct. The car drives great on the stock wheels. I even tracked the car at Road Atlanta on stock and it was very well behaved. I then installed MP coilovers ( already have GC camber plates) and Tire Rack square 18 set up. I ran 275 square slicks but needed 10mm front spacers....car tracked like a boss. Then tried RE71 square in 265, without spacers, and it was almost as good as the slicks. Overall this car is so well balance that any set up will work. Don't spend the money or hassle with wheels unless you really have a "need" like getting an extra 3-4 seconds per lap.

Thanks for the feedback. I have limited track experience (2 day M School) so I am not seeking optimum track times. What I want to accomplish is to not use of my street tires too much and take advantage of tires with a little more grip for HDPE days. I think I will try a few track days before I spend any money.

In regards to tires another set of wheels with Michelin PSS or similar would be perfect! Showing up with a "track tire" when are first learning is a bad idea. You want to be able to learn how the car moves around, slides, good wet performance, etc. While track tires give better dry grip, they offer you less in the other areas making it harder to learn what is really important. The best investment you can make is track time! Specifically, BMW CCA HPDE weekends.

True story. The RE71R is the top Autocross tire out there right now and it can certainly be used for track use .. however one will get half the life of the other two as well. |

Since I am just starting out I have decided to run my stock setup this year and do 3-4 track days and then decide which way to go rather than investing in a dedicated setup. I am at about 10,000 miles and my rear conti's are close to being done, well close enough. I am not a fan. Anyway I have a set of the new Michelin Pilot Sport 4s in the garage that are going on Monday, I will use those this year and report back how things are going.

The "XL" rating on a tire is referring to the load rating. It does not have anything to do with the dimensions. |

But the 265 Nto1 has a 26.3 diameter. Seems a little large for the M2. Especially on the front. Maybe the 275's at 25.5 would be a better option!?!?

You must be looking at the 265/40/18. I cannot guarantee a 265/40/18 to clear. To be clear, I am only recommending a 265/35/18 as a square setup. |
