What is your reference? I agree BMW.com lists the M2 as 1570kg with manual tranny (to compare apples to apples). But most sources list the 1M as 1495kg and I can't find a current official BMW source for the 1M to refute that.

1495 kg is not Unladen. Here is a old press piece from 2011.

The weight of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé is precisely the same as that of the previous generation of the BMW M3, with comparable output and much higher torque. The vehicle weighs 1,495kg (DIN kerb weight) (with 90% full fuel tank without driver and luggage); the 1,570 kg specified are the EU standard weight (including 75 kg for driver and luggage).

Tjänstevikt kg = Unladen weight

I think you meant to say the 1495kg IS unladen - which is pretty much what the excerpt you cited says. The 1570kg for the M2 is also the unladen weight.

No, it says in both texts that the 1M is 1570kg, same as the M2.

From the M2 info @ BMW.com

(Unladen weight (EU) in kg: the figure quoted includes a 90 per cent tank filling, 68 kg for the driver and 7 kg for luggage. Unladen weight applies to vehicles with standard equipment. Optional equipment may increase this figure.)

So 1570 - 75 = 1495kg

They are identical according to BMW (in Europe).

You are right, that is what they appear to be saying. I am pretty shocked, as everyone talks about how overweight the M2 is and no one I recall has said anything similar about the 1M.

Everyone I have seen quotes 1495kg for the 1M and 1570kg for the M2... hard to believe they have been quoting different standards all this time.

I think it is because BMW quotes its unladen weights with EU standard (driver + luggage) in most instances whereas unladen weight usually is without. A recipe for confusion.

So the takeaway here is that at 1495kg or 3289lbs. the M2 is by no means a "heavy" car. Contrary to what has become the widespread conventional wisdom including amongst almost every single "expert" reviewer and journalist. This makes it lighter than the E46 (according to data I've seen) and approximately 120lbs heavier than a 991.2 Carrera S with a manual. Not too shabby at all.
