That is correct.I finally had someone in Toronto, who has there 6MT M2 at there dealership, confirm yesterday that the shift knob does not light up when you turn on the driving lights. It does seem strange that they wouldn't have this feature, when the M3 shift knob lights up.It certainly wouldn't cost much and it looks great.

an M3 over an M2.

How much is an M4 lighted shift knob at the dealer? Maybe $250 right?

Can't see why people expecting all the goodies on the M4 to be on the M2? If you want M4 seats, (good luck fitting them ) , lighted shift knob, cf roof , adjustable shocks , etc just buy then with the 14k you saved off an M4. Simple.

I agree 100%, it seems that many folks think the M2 should have the same features as the M4/3. If BMW did that the M2 would cost about the same as the M4. After all the little bit of difference in the amount of sheet metal used isn't a significant cost savings so they had to save money buy using more of the M235i infrastructure and features and add content that would improve performance. I think they did an excellent job of finding the sweet spot. If I want nicer seats a carbon roof etc than I can have that, I would just have to buy an M4. Personally those things aren't worth the additional cash for me, the M2 fits perfectly within my budget so I am really excited to have a new M car within that budget.

Seriously? M2 electric steering better than E90 M3 hydraulic steering? Can you please double confirm?

I bought my second M3 E9X just for the steering feel alone.
The e90 m3 steering is not bad imho, however coming from an e46 and e30 M your quickly notice the difference. There were times I liked it and other times I felt it was artificial. My initial thoughts are for only 375 miles, in rain and at those speeds I feel that the M2 felt great....my thoughts may change when I get it in track. Time will tell.

Yes. It may seem silly but there are about 15 of those silly little exclusive features and it makes a big difference to a lot of buyers.

CF roof
Vented fenders
" m" mirrors :
" m " seats :
Better quality leather
cf driveshaft
Optional extended leather
Adaptive shocks
M buttons on steering wheel
*Lighted shift knob

Most of these items don't cost much at all right ? But together this 14k " option package " makes many people go for an M4.

Otherwise the front page would be another F8x M3/M4 in an individual color and we've seen plenty of that too.

Checkit .... 6 hours later and an imola red individual M4 bumps the M2 you whined about off front page :

It really isn't even much of an M3 goodie. It is a feature that I have always liked on my E46 M3 but certainly not something that would influence my purchase of an M2.The only reason to not offer it on the M2 is because they want to keep it exclusive to the more expensive M cars.As you said,it is not something that would cost much for BMW to offer on the M2.

Yes. I know. I had an E30 M3 and the cool thing to do was add a lighted shift knob. Again. It's a cheap mod. At around $250 for that mod, you have $13,750 to go. :

I think it's fun to compare the M2 vs the M3/4.... Let's all be honest, and ideal BMW would be the chassis of the M2, the engine, carbon, Mirrors etc.

That will never happen, so you have to pick do you want the smaller, slower but more fun car to drive with bare bone features or the larger, more powerful technology packed car? Honestly, I could own both and be happy for the overlapping reasons. When I was looking at cars, the M4, GT4 and GTR were all in the mix. Any of these cars would be legit for different reasons. Enjoy what you have and try to get in some track days .

For some bloodline tracing (at least conceptually), let's also look for a moment into another direction than towards M4 land:

E82 1M (2011):
  • manufactured at BMW Leipzig factory
  • limited production (1 year - 6309 cars) - limited availability - no variants - sold new at higher than MSRP by some US dealers - higher than usual resale value
  • introduced to the public at Detroit Motor Show (January 2011)
  • initial main platform for conception: BMW 135i
  • 3 body colors (AW, BSM, VO [launch color])
  • 1 interior color (black leather [Boston Schwarz] with Kyalami Orange accent stitching)
  • technically upgraded N-series engine (N54)
  • 340hp [metric]
  • 500Nm torque (450+50Nm overboost)
  • E9X M3 underpinnings (track/suspension/brakes)
  • E9X M3 ZCP wheels (359M - 19")
  • 6-speed manual transmission only - no rev-matching (no M-DCT available)
  • 4 seats
  • EU5 emissions rating
  • sport mode ("M" button on steering wheel)
  • MDM + DSC OFF
  • no CF roof
  • no powerdome
  • no vented fenders
  • no one-piece front seats
  • no CF driveshaft
  • no adaptive shocks
  • no lighted gear shift knob
  • no Head-Up Display option
  • no front Park Distance Control
  • no front fog lights
  • no BMW Individual
  • Alcantara interior trim and no CF interior trim
  • V-max limited
  • hydraulic steering (no Electric Power Steering)
  • twin-stalk side mirrors (E9X M3)
  • no Active Sound Design
  • non-sliding armrest
  • no vertical reflectors on the rear bumper
  • limited options (not including glass sliding roof, Driving Assistant, Speed Limit Info, rear view camera, Concierge Services and heated steering wheel)
F87 M2 base version (2016):
  • manufactured at BMW Leipzig factory
  • no limited production - temporary limited availability - variants possible (M2 CS rumored for MY2018) - sold new at higher than MSRP by some US dealers - resale value currently unknown
  • introduced to the public at Detroit Motor Show (January 2016)
  • initial main platform for conception: BMW M235i
  • 4 body colors (AW, BSM, MG and LBB [launch color])
  • 1 interior color (black leather [Dakota Schwarz] with Polar Blue accent stitching)
  • technically upgraded N-series engine (N55)
  • 370hp [metric]
  • 500Nm torque (465+35Nm overboost)
  • M4 underpinnings (track/suspension/brakes)
  • optional M3/M4 wheels (437M - 19")
  • 6-speed manual transmission with rev-matching + M-DCT optionally available
  • 4 seats
  • EU6 emissions rating
  • sport mode ("Sport" button next to gearbox)
  • MDM ("Sport+") + DSC OFF ("DSC OFF")
  • no CF roof
  • no powerdome

  • no one-piece front seats
  • no CF driveshaft
  • no adaptive shocks
  • no lighted gear shift knob
  • no Head-Up Display option
  • no front Park Distance Control
  • no front fog lights
  • no BMW Individual
  • open-pore CF interior trim and limited interior Alcantara trim
  • V-max limited but optionally delimited ("M Driver's Package")
  • Electric Power Steering (no hydraulic steering)
  • no twin-stalk side mirrors (M235i)
  • Active Sound Design
  • sliding armrest

  • limited options (including glass sliding roof [some regions], Driving Assistant, Speed Limit Info, rear view camera, Concierge Services and heated steering wheel)
Conclusion: Variation sur le même thème ? Variation sur la même ///M !

Right on point. Though the GT4 doesn't really offer the dual duty of daily/track car like the M2/4 or GTR.

True but I was referring to the choices I was looking at during the past month. I'd drive a two seater as a daily without a thought. But that is just me.

I honestly would have bought the Gt4, however I was not willing to pay the markup, I really dislike any dealer that gouges the price.
