"1994-1995 E36 M3 are powered by a 3.0L tuned version of the M50 which produces 179 kW (240 hp)" "In 1996, the 3,201 cc (195 cu in) S50B32 replaced the S50B30 (..) This engine produces 236 kW (316 hp)" From a tuned engine to a different one... So BMW has indeed upgraded a car engine from a tuned version to a more powerful one over the course of 1-2 years. Considered that the M2 is supposed to be the modern day E36, BMW is definitely following a past trend here. S55 is the proof of this. However, whether they will upgrade the N55 is the real million dollar question... On a side note, the original Z3M engine setup lasted 3/4 years before it got changed so it's not really comparable to M2's current situation. |

Correct.. the M2 was released in April 2016... and it began with Model year 2016. only around 750 were made. 2017 models began shipping last summer.. and will continue until this spring., So.. if model year 2018 comes out this summer.. ..the new motor is next year... not this year right? |

From Wikipedia OBD-II standardization was prompted to simplify diagnosis of increasingly complicated emissions equipment, and though only emission-related codes and data are required to be transmitted through it according to U.S. legislation, most manufacturers have made the OBD-II Data Link Connector the main connector in the vehicle through which all systems are diagnosed and reprogrammed The E36 M3 in the US was produced for an exceptionally long time due to this change... I don't recall exactly but I do believe all 1996 model year vehicles in the US were required to be OBD-II. Last edited by M3 Adjuster; 01-20-2017 at 08:46 PM.. |

MY2018 = Around Summer the previous year If BMW decides to change engine it will most likely be with its LCI which is put on the market around July this year. There's also the M2 CS version with supposedly a detuned version of the s55 (m3/m4) engine coming in MY2019 (Summer 2018) |

This ^^. The e36 M3 went from the S50 to the S52 in the US because of federal emissions requirements for 1996 - the engine gained .2 liters, produced the same power, had a slightly better torque curve, but could produce less total power without a OBDI conversion - meaning the 1995 S50 was better for those looking to get euro-levels of power out of their US spec M3. The only real instance of BMW ever changing engines in a M car mid cycle was the z3 - going from the S52 to S54 which was a huge change in every possible way. It's never happened since and it's not going to happen here. But if it did, I'll be in line to buy it Those S54 Z3s are awesome and they're going for more used than they were new.

My brother in law just sold his (real) E36 M3 3.0 (286hp) for an Alfa... That was a disappointment to say the least.

I'm just wondering... previous arguments have supported the view that LCI cars are manufactured in september, after the august holidays during which re-tooling takes place. Which would mean availability for delivery presumably late september. Or have I got that wrong ? How quickly have LCI'd cars actually been delivered in the past ? The question is critical for me because my dealer is quoting a vague "june delivery" to me, although he still hasn't heard anything concrete.

The specific model is listed as a 2017 model yet it was delivered in late July 2016. At least from what I've been told it takes 60 days from payment for the car to be delivered, so I'm guessing that's the average build time unless certain aspects of assembly have already been dealt with. |

Correct. What hasn't been factored in is that the factory will be closed at some point during the summer. I believe in August and I believe for 4 weeks. Someone with details can chime in, however that would add 4 weeks to those delivery dates. I wouldn't want to wait for an lci and finally get it in the winter, unable to drive it.

I'm trading my M2 in and going back on the waiting list. I have the MY April 2016 LLB DCT with full MPE (less suspension) and as much as I love it, I want a manual and I want a newer one. The pre First batch of M2s until MY17 are going to be less wanted so I managed o get a great deal on a brand new M2 with estimated shipping date of October 17 and LCI. I will only go with the MPE exhaust and grill this time as I'm getting mineral grey. I have also spec hthis one as light as I could compared to my old M2
Harmon Kardon (same as before) I like my music Manual seats - lumbar support only (probably a 15kg saving) Bluetooth phone prep (same) Manual (30kg saving) No reverse camera ( 2kg) Sun protection and exterior folding mirrors (same) That's it really, nice and simple drivers car.... |

No compulsory packages in the UK. You can build a (relatively) stripped out car if you want it that way.
