Staying BMW? Are you getting a decent payout? Curious what they gave you for a 70k mi M2... If you want to keep that info private, no worries, I get it....

Good luck with the hunt!

Yep that electrical fire smell will never ever ever go away

Unfortunate but smart to walk away and start anew

What's fishy with these type of videos is…when something like this happen why is it your first instinct to film it? Really sad the direction social media is taking society.

All the people saying you can’t get the smell out, that is 100% not true. I led a team that was responsible for repairing 40+ EV’s that were open inside a building that had an EV catch on fire and burned to the ground with two other cars that were next to it. There was water damage from the sprinklers as well as ash and smoke. All of the cars were completely disassembled in the interior and restored and rebuilt. All but one car passed not only internal inspections but also government inspections and owner inspections. There was one buyback and the three burned cars were obviously totaled.

Electrical fire from the inside an automobile is nearly impossible to get the smell out

You might do a really good job at it but one day it'll definitely come back

Price out the replacement cost of an entire BMW M2 interior including the headliner you'll be astonished at the price

I have 40 cars that prove what you’re saying wrong. It was literally my job to make sure they would pass QC standards and be not only as good as pre-fire but basically new.

Headliners, carpets, seats, dash pads, steering wheel, floor mats, we replaced it all and you can get e the smell out. In the OP’s case that entire interior needs to be down to bare metal and if it’s all replaced it will be fine but I definitely understand why the insurance totaled it. Not surprised by that at all.

👍🏼

I smell things most people cannot

Every single circumstance is different

Regardless of your experience it really doesn't make it so cut and dry

That car had its windows closed, there's no way that smell will ever really come out

On a nice hot summer day you'll smell it like lingering cigarettes from a not so distant past

Agreed with M Town

I guess I can smell things others can't. Many dealeers have said the same thing to me. Sensativity to smoke and all things burnt is my special talent I guess...

Surely the fact that one car didn't pass and the one buy back, is proof that what you did, did not completely resolve the issue even though you went through great expense and effort to resolve it?

Don't forget, this car was actually on fire. Probably more smoke concentration than just being in a building with distant car on fire. Even the metal, insulation pads, rubber seals, etc will stink of smoke and melted plastic. You can't swap everything affected out, not economically viable.

The reason for the one buy back was actually an issue unrelated to the fire ironically. Secondly, insurance paid for all of the cars to be restored. Lastly, for some cars we did replace literally everything in the interior.

Complete interior disassembly and replacement really just isn't worth it on an M2. Given the costs of interior parts you are likely to meet or exceed the value of the car, and then you will always have a car that caught on fire.

And, as was pointed out, exposure inside of a building is very very different when compared to a fire occurring in this vehicle.

I have since “replaced” with a M340i. I like the new car but it’s no replacement for my M2 that’s for sure... Especially when you make a car “yours” via mods etc. The 340i is also def not a M car that’s for sure! I’ll be back to MTown in a G80 sooner rather than later.
