That picture nicely resumes my thoughts: I chose the M2 mainly for the sound and the looks. The M4 is too long as a sports coupe and does not look as nible and sporty as the M2 (just the looks, performance is another thing).

When I first saw the M2 I said to myself: this is what the (back then) M3 should look like!

But the sportier look comes to a price: less room for back seats.

Gosh, that photo does a great job of showing how much presence the M4 has. I don't own either car, just my immediate impression from seeing the photo.

I would be a lot more interested in the M2C if individual paint were an option. The color palette is brutal. Alpine white is always nice, but feel like it's just so common.
It really shows how much of a land yacht it is. Just look at the size of that thing next to the m2!

One thing I realized seeing an M2 recently with a rear spoiler is that for some reason the rear looked so much better with that spoiler. Maybe the rear spoiler balances it a bit but thought it looked perfect. I'm definitely leaning toward the M2. Now just deciding if I buy a current, used M2 or go for a new M2C.

I think the bulldog stance of the m2 has the wow factor that puts it over the m4 regarding looks. However, the factory carbon roof and individual paint availability on the m4 is very enticing.

Just asked the girl sitting next to me which one she'd prefer , she said the one on the right, she didnt like how the m4 looked too 'stretched out' and thought the OG looked more sportier

The M4 is Murdered-Out, and the wheels were Powder-Coated Black so it looks super mean!

They both turn a lot of heads, especially when one follows the other...

I put my 4'1'' daughter in the back seat of my M2 several times a week, no issues. My 5'4'' wife has ridden in the back a few times to let my mom or dad ride in front on a few occasions, no complaints on short trips.

I love having a smaller car, I daily drove an S2000 for 3+ years so I have different preferences than most, I actually wish the M2 was a little smaller. I doubt you'll regret getting the M2 based on the size difference of the M4, the amount of usable space really isn't a whole lot different.

If you are asking N55 vs S55 or other options that the M4 gets that the M2 does not, then maybe depending on what you want/need. I love my N55 and I love the M2 in general, I need nothing more. Good luck!

Interesting facts per bmwusa.com
The M4 is 8.3" longer than the M2C (about 4% longer)
The M4 is .6" wider than the M2C
The M4 is 1.1" lower than the M2C
The M4 weighs 25 lbs more than the M2C in manual and 30 lbs more in DCT
The M4 wheel base is 4.7" longer
The M4 and M2C have almost identical weight distribution
BMW has the 0-60 reversed for the M2C on their website.

The basic proportions of the M2 make it a much more aggressive looking car.

To me it erodes the lines and makes it hard to distinguish from a 440i

I would get an M4 over an M2 if it was someone else's money.. But at 82k spec the way I want, the monthly payments is little less than my mortgage.. Yikes..

You get a lot more in the M4 that is not apparent just by physically comparing the two vehicle.. It's all in the fine print; the M4 is made of light weight material and not forgetting the adaptive suspension option and a choice of red interior..

However, the M2/M2C is more bang for your buck, IMO.

Win - win either way..

I will get an M2 next week, I had a 2017 M3 and let me tell you that it is boring due to the sound of the exhaust, I put an akrapovic exhaust and still I did not felt it sounded good, hoping the M2 sound better; by the way I also had the GT350R and that thing really sounds good, I loved it. Again I hope Im not making a mistake and by the way I prefer the regular M2 not M2C because of the same reason, the S55 engine does not sound any good, I hated the farts.

Well I took it with a Potato for one.

And it's not my style it's my friend Nick's.

While I agree with you it looks much better in person.

I agree. The M4 is too stretched out. Can't believe that the new M4 may be even longer. I like the compact M2 better. Would be willing to pay for a 500 hp M2 that only weighs 3,300 lbs

Hey, is that you Tom? How are things?

I met Tom a few years ago when I did a story on him and his multi-hundred thousand mile M5 for a Roundel piece.

To the OP's question: I did a BMW performance center event, driving the M3, M4, M5 and M2. Overall, even if money was not a factor, I preferred the M2.

Regular, N55 M2 with M performance exhaust is one of the best sounding straight 6 engines I've heard. (I may be a little biased )

When I was younger my dream car was the Porsche 928 S4. Told myself that when I reached the point where I could afford something special, that was the car I wanted. Then I got my chance, drove one, and it just felt big. Felt like the perfect car for going really fast in a straight line, but too big to be tossable. So I opted for a Euro-spec 928 5-speed instead, one of the 1st gen 928 cars. Don't know if it was actually smaller, but it felt smaller. It's amazing now to think that as big as the 928 S4 seemed back then, the M4 is even bigger by another 6 inches.

And having driven two different M4 examples - one with comp pack and one without, both for extended test sessions - there's no comparison with the aural experience between the M2 and M4. For anyone for whom sound is important, the M2 is the easy call. The fact that the seats in the OG M2 are much more comfortable, even if they're not as sporty looking, is just more icing on the cake.
