Disagree - it's awful.
I listen to Podcasts 98% of the time in the car. The other 2% the stereo is off and the windows are down. ASD is heinous. In Sport/Sport+ it honestly makes me feel like there is pressure in my ears like I'm under water. Bypass harness eta next week.

I turned mine back on
I have catless DP + MPE and couldn't stand how quiet and subdued the car sounded with ASD bypassed. Felt like a 5 series inside and not the spirit of the M2 - still feel the car is far too quiet inside at times with windows up and backseats up. |

I agree. I have ASD bypassed and love the car in it’s natural state. I do have the MPE so I have more noise than pure stock.

But even with stock exhaust, this car is loud inside. If folks have problems hearing the engine/exhaust inside the cabin with windows up, maybe their hearing is at issue. Or, they want the car to sound like their Harley with drag pipes.

Has anyone managed to make a switch just like the OP but that would allow the sound system to play when ASD is disabled? I hate what ASD does in the highway (droning) but I really enjoy it when cruising at slower speeds.
For the moment, I simply pull off the switch when going for longer runs on the highway, but (of course) I would ideally like to keep the sound system working also... |

Just installed. As a few other posters mentioned, the rubber trunk seal is not necessary to remove!! I wasted a lot of time manhandling it back in place, only to realize I didn't have to remove it in the first place. Otherwise the install is a piece of cake.
The car sounds amazing in its natural, 'organic' state. The induction, engine growl, and exhaust flow together so nicely indeed. Why did anyone at BMW think the ASD would be a good idea? To hide the road noise I suppose? Who cares.. just install this harness and be happy. |

Thanks to the OP: I did just like you explained and now I have a switch that allows me to “remove” the fuse without having to go in the trunk.
It is therefore extremely easy to toggle between ASD on and off while driving and hear the difference live (audio memory is usually very imprecise...) I must say the difference in sound is MUCH less than what I thought. To me, the difference is only obvious when cruising on a highway at a constant 118 km/h. The droning really disappears when ASD is turned off. I will try to test the difference with my SPL onboard soon, but I suspect the SPL meter will not be able to record a difference because it seems so small subjectively. |

In every situation, I could this time easily hear the added noise when turning on the ASD. In every situation, the SPL meter was 2 (two) decibels higher with the ASD on. The baseline noise level varied a lot, mainly because of the various roads conditions I have tested (between 82 and 90 decibels), but every time I turned on the ASD on, the SPL meter went 2 decibels higher. Every time. That is significant, and easily audible (about 1.2 times louder), but still, that is not a lot more. But those two additional decibels are so annoying...! |

I liked the ASD so much I coded it out AND installed a bypass harness as a double fuck you. Good riddance.

Bypassing ASD has been one of the best (and cheapest) mods I've done to the car. It was horribly intrusive and completely unnecessary. Good riddance.

I just installed the bypass harness yesterday. 30 minutes is all it took me. And yes, no need to remove the rubber seal.
As I reported in another thread, https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...5&postcount=20 I did measure the difference in dB from my seating position and no matter the mode (sports or sports plus) or the MPE valve setting (opened or closed) I measured a consistent +2 decibels with MPE enabled. So, that is not +6 decibels as some have suggested, but those two extra decibels were annoying (droning is gone now on the highway). Last edited by Stef; 10-11-2018 at 01:38 PM.. |
