Oil leak
Hi all,
I've noticed an oil leak while changing the charge pipe of my car (M2 N55 25k KM). Only other mod I have is a downpipe. Looks like it's between the engine and gearbox. Should I take it to the dealer? |

I would. You are still under warranty so why not?

It could be leaking from the front and the wind is pushing it towards the back when the car is moving. Oil filter housing gasket??? - it's fairly common leak on N55

Nice catch OP,
Found the same thing at 17k miles....oil pan gasket. Luckily its under warranty.....if not under warranty...and you can't stomache the job....its roughly 1400 from quotes I've seen. Its a bit intensive...need to drop the subframe to access it. |

From your pic it looks like the oil pan gasket to me. I once had a modified SRT-4 that had an oil pan gasket leak. I took it in for service and first guy gave me grief over the fact that it had an aftermarket exhaust on it. I asked him how that could cause an oil pan gasket to leak? He was fine after I had him actually think about it. I think you should be fine.

I've read that it can be a common thing on an N55. If it does happen I would expect it to be higher mileage like yours. I think the OP mentioned he was at 25K KM so that's like 15K miles.

Wow, a common, labor-intensive $1400 issue on a BMW with less than 100K on the clock? Noooooo....

Yup 25k Kms , so ~15k Miles. I wouldn’t found out if it wasn’t for the charge pipe swap, since the reinforcement plate blocks the view.
Also, I had a oil service around 1000 KMs ago, maybe they overfilled it or something. |

And yes, they can make a case that the downpipe overtaxed the motor, causing the oil pan to leak and politely tell him to go kick rocks because he tampered with an emission control device.. It might not be true but that's how the game goes when you mod a stock vehicle and expect the manufacture foot the bill for a repair. Don't believe me? Just wait and hear what they say.. |
