The kidneys may not touch in the middle. However, that space may be filled with a "transparent" black panel containing the sensors for the adaptive cruise control, automatic braking and/or other nannies, so the front end has the appearance of having a one-piece grill.

Adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, or front camera on the 2 series? Don't think so...

This is what Scott said:

If you look at the black section it aligns perfectly with the lower edge of the headlights and at the top at the bonnet line. So it looks like one piece.
The newer models will now offer a joint kidney grille. Starting with the M2 and the exciting new 8er.

SCOTT26 already said in another thread that the kidneys will touch in the middle.Apparently the M2 and new 8 series will be the first BMW models to get that new design feature.

Kidneys joined in the middle?

I am not sure I will like that - will be interesting to see.

SCOTT26 said that the 8 series has the same design,so the new M2 Competition kidney grill design should look like this leaked pic of the 8 series.Only difference is that it will be gloss black.

Those aren't kidneys. They're buttocks.

hydraulic steering
MANUAL seats
MANUAL TRANSMISSION WITH NO AUTO REV MATCH

all of which I am not willing to give up.
Your list should only be hydraulic steering. You can code the auto rev match out for like $50. You should be getting new seats in both the 1M & M2. They both have garbage seats.

If you compare the 1M to the M2 by performance, the M2 dominates the 1M in every category. Not only performance, updates from infotainment, interior, basically everything.

I can think of 2 advantages the 1M has over the M2,

hydraulic steering & smaller car overall (if you like that)

If hydraulic steering is more important than every performance upgrades, and updates inside and out, then the 1M is fine.
I'm sure the 1M and M2 dominate in performance over the E30 M3 but the E30 M3 is way more fun to drive. It also seems to be worth more than an M2 currently.

And HELL yes the hydraulic steering alone is absolutely a reason i prefer the 1M.

The seats are the same in both cars however the 1M seats are lower because they do not have motors in them.

You also forgot resale value, as well as exclusivity are both advantages in favor of the 1M.

Finally, I can easily fit 285/30/18 on my 1M. It can go much wider in the rear should I decide to. I've already used 315/30 which was awesome.

The cars are really very nearly identical but the original is the one to have.

But they join, and that is what the poster of the (M8) was trying to show. The Kidney shape maybe different, but them joining together at the center is what they (8 series and M2) will supposedly have in common.

Agree...

Slightly different cars, but if it's anywhere near $105,000, we are talking about impinging on probably the most important model in Porsche's lineup..ever: 911 Carrera S

I am talking MSRP, of course...

I compared the 1M to the M2 not the E30 M3.

Performance aspect, the M2 is just better in every way. Resale value doesn't have any performance benefit. But if you are buying the car based on resale value and steering wheel feel, 1M. If you want a better car overall with warranty and updates everywhere, M2.
