I don't get it. I understand it's part of "real M" cars... but BMW didn't put them on the M2 for a reason. (I also think they are kind of ugly, but everyone has their own preference there.)

I'm pretty sure that I read wind noise / other aerodynamics were a concern and actually part of the reason they chose not to put the M mirrors on.
People don't think about it but there is a massive investment in NVH research on cars, and wind whistle from mirrors is actually a big deal. On the M3/4, the funky mirror was necessary to hit their NVH target as far as wind noise was concerned; on the M2 they apparently didn't need it due to the different shape of the car. Of course, product differentiation / segmentation is also a part of it... but I would rather have the mirror on the car that was tested to be better, than have something with a weird little wing thing on it that actually makes the car worse (objectively, per BMW's own testing).

The mirror caps don't even look close and look fake to me especially from the back side.

Hate to break it to you but those don't look the same at all. I wish there was a somewhat more affordable solution to having m3/m4 mirrors on these cars. IMO that's the only swap to the overall look aside from MP caps (or equivalents from akrapovic etc) that should be done to the mirrors on these cars.

BMW will only sell you the complete unit, plastic cover is the only thing that can be purchased separately. All the electrical come as one complete unit with mirror...
