Missed this completely!
IMHO, I repeat IMHO; I did an extensive testdrive with the M4 M-DCT about 1000km (!!), coming from the Cayman GTS PDK, also have owned E46 M3 6MT, E92 M3 6MT, E82 1M 6MT (Now F87 M2 on order ETA april 2016) Well, the auto function DCT can in NO way match the auto PDK, the DCT is to slow in picking the right gear, especially on downshifts. The PDK is faster in picking the right gear in up- and downshifts, it can be easily modulated and manipulated by throttle, just lift a little and up she shifts, the DCT will take far more time to react on lifting and than up shifting. So if people are motivated by buying a DCT because of dd in cities and love the auto function, be advised IMHO. Should I buy a Porsche in the future I would without hesitation by a PDK, BMW has work to do on the (auto function) DCT, so far I will definite buy a BMW 6MT. (I did this with the M2) |

The DCT is in no way on par with the PDK! Yes there is delay on pulling the paddle and following the up- or downshift, it is not much, but it is noticeable and compared to the PDK the difference is significant! But the DCT auto function ( and from what I can tell how people overhere are motivating the choise between a MT or DCT and let that depend on dd in cities or heavy traffic) is even worse. No that is to mild; it is bad!! I did the M4 testdrive with a friend of mine, he owns a 120d with the ZF 8speed auto. That ZF 8 speed is far more better than de DCT auto function. If you want an auto box tranny you`ll better take the ZF IMHO (and my friends opinion too) Last edited by Romo; 02-28-2016 at 02:28 AM.. |

Try, if possible, the Porsche PDK. You will be surprised. I`m a Bimmer fan myself, I`ve driven quite some ///M`s, but one has got to tell the truth, and the truth is that the PDK outsmarts the DCT in every way. But than again, this is my subjective opinion. The truth can be inconvenient sometimes ! |

Your own truth, Robert, can be very inconvenient sometimes
You got rid of your Cayman GTS because of the 'poor steering' So guys, I'm getting a 6MT, but DCT in any way is a fantastic choice. Don't forget the total package of an //M car is a compromise between sportiness and daily ergonomics. Look at the total package. Any(sports)car has its flaw(s). Not only the cars from Munich, also the ones from Zuffenhausen. But I'd buy a GT4 or GT3 RS rightaway. Without testdriving. Just like I did with the M2 But I wanted a DCT at first(MT costs 6800 euros more thanks to those commies ruling over our country and BMW distributor as well..), the way I'm driving my car , MT suits me better, less electronics more mechanical. But reading this thread and seeing/hearing the test M2 flying by at the Ring(page 4?) I'm not 100% sure about 6MT again... Why does an M4 GTS have DCT in the first place? I'd better go and get some coffee now. Cheers Robin |

It's all perception isn't it? Is 370HP fast (enough) ? Is turn in fast (enough), is the balance good(enough). Braking? Shifting? Etc. For me it is, but when you come from a DD 458 Speciale it probably is not Cheers Robin |

Yes because of bad steering feel, NOT because of PDK !! That is the discussion here !! No more no less. The GT4 has a 10% faster steering rack than the GTS, for your information. I will say it again; PDK>>DCT Try them your selves, than make your own conclusion. |

I'm giving DCT a try this time and if it bores me to death I will probably end up trading it in for a manual LCI in orange or CS/GTS/CSL if it comes in manual and with optional backseats. <----I have no problem daily driving a hardcore track beast but I need the backseats for the kids...ahem...I mean track tires...right Artemis!?

I would get the M2 in manual, while the M3/4 in DCT. Personally for me, I won't really be tracking the car & will be a nice canyon carving car. I'll have something much faster for the track that won't have all that leather & heavy sound deadening material.

If I'm racing professionally, flappy paddle gearbox all day! Every other moment in a car should be with 3 pedals as far as I'm concerned. I loathe auto boxes.
