At some point during F87 M2 development a 4-cyl has been considered.
But as we know, the 6-cyl made it to the final cut of the first generation M2.

At no point could a 4 cylinder be considered for F87 m2. There is no 2.0L powerplant to date from BMW that supports 365 crank HP. The engine debates can only be between a beefed up n55/b58 or a detuned s55. So think twice thanking BMW for the decision.
And if you consider F22 m235 already has a 6-pot N55, a 4-cylinder for F87 would easily have been the all-time stupidest M decision.
