Apparently, it must not be a big deal to drop in a new lump for one model year, as BMW did exactly that when the N55 came out - it made its debut in the final year of the E90 3-series, model year 2011.

This is why my guess is that the std M2 will live on when the CS comes out, and it might just get the B58 for 2019 and 2020. It wouldn't be an unprecedented move and, at any rate, it's fun to speculate.
