Never thought about that as the M3/M4 ones are recessed inward as well. I basically took the OEM one, 3D scan it and change the reflective part to my designs.
I actually think it'd look weird if the covers are flush with the bumper.. makes the rear looks really flat?
Take a look at the 1M, the recess looks fine and adds touch to the rear bumper IMO.
