The M2 power delivery doesn’t feel as good (less linear, less direct connection between throttle and engine) even if it’s faster. The 997 was twitchy, it always felt like it was tempting you to go, while the M2 is much more subdued

Not surprising. I think given the choice, money no object for a non-daily car, most people would pick the 997. I probably would. I think the "whole package" aspect of the M2 is pretty appealing, though. Maybe track time will change your mind...
