Yeah I always recommend starting at the stock gap size then moving down if misfires persist and are not due to HPFP crashes, coil failures etc. This way you don't have to jump around to a bunch of different gap sizes in search of misfires and stuttering.

Remember you always want the largest possible gap size to ensure complete combustion. That doesn't mean always stick with a large gap no matter what, sometimes you don't have a choice and have to gap down because your coils might be weaker or you might be making enough power to blow out the spark. That is why you always have to read your plugs and look at logs and make an informed decision on gap size.
