It sounds like pebbles caught between rotor and the metal heat shield. You can reach in and push on shield and the pebble falls out. It has happened to me several times on my e90 M3 and the M2. It is crazy how loud it is for a tiny pebble. Everyone thinks you just got married and are dragging cans behind the car.
