FWD has tons of advantages. Cheaper to make, lighter, fewer parts, better fuel economy, better interior packaging. It's why so many other cars are FWD.
Disadvantage: shitty driving dynamics
Funny, my GTI has comically better driving dynamics than our LCI F30. It even has a mechanical limited slip, weighs 400 pounds less, has something weird called steering feedback and gets better mileage.

Just simply being rwd doesn't magically make a car special, something BMW seems to have completely forgotten with the entire, awful F Series. Hopefully the G gets closer to their roots, but I'm not holding my breath.
