What exactly about the 2NH brakes that has clearance issues?

I really want to try many wheel options, but apparently the big brakes up front on the Competition models have clearance issues. Downsizing the front brakes to the AP Racing setup is popular, but I do not want to lose the 400mm rotors. I may switch out the calipers for the CCB gold calipers that utilize titanium pistons.

So what part of the caliper does it give issues? Is it so big that the inner barrel diameter of the wheel would come in contact with the caliper? Is it the thickness of the caliper and how far it sticks out depth-wise that doesn't allow wheels to completely bolt on to the hub?

Would going up to 20 inch wheels alleviate some of the clearance issues?

Thanks
