My guess is that they can create a "high strung" I4 that has to have the nuts revved off it (since so many people complain about that leaving the M3/4) and have a much more raw purpose than the M offerings further up the food chain.
It also creates distinction between the Ms--2 gets an I4, 3/4 gets an I6, 5/6 get V8s. Sort of goes along with this even = coupe and odd = sedan stuff--just lines up nicely.
If it makes a good noise, is light and a little crazy, I don't care what engine they put in it. I just want it to be
different than the other M offerings. I think it has a chance to be so. We shall see...
