We were having the same discussion over on Planet 9 too - I really believe this is another way that Porsche is actively distinguishing the 911...every time the Boxster/Cayman platform gets too close, they find a way to neuter it.
Case in point - you want a F6 in a Porsche? You now must buy a 911 if you want to buy something new. It's the same reason the GT4 has ridiculously long gearing and no PDK...it would be getting too close to the equivalent 911 GT cars if those things were equal.
This switch (in my opinion anyway) was enacted under the guise of reduced emissions and better gas mileage, but marketing must have played a large role as well. Porsche doesn't even sell that many Boxster/Caymans...how much of a dent could this change really make in their overall MPG and CO2 numbers? I can't see it having a huge effect...but I might be wrong.
