In my mind, it is rather simple - the N54 was super easy to tune, and besides the non-related fuel pump issue, you don't hear of 400 BHP N54 monsters blowing up, or maybe I have missed that? Additionally, I believe that there are comments from BMW themselves, related to the forged internals of the N54...and that at one point, the original 135 with the N54 was considered to be developed as an M car...which later became the 1M...and I haven't ever heard that for an N55...
The N55 itself, on the other hand, is not easy to tune, and from what I have read, it seems to be that you have to be careful above 360 BHP. I am pretty sure Dackel commented on this in the 400 BHP M235 thread if you want to look there...
Perfectly happy to eat some crow if I am wrong, or misremembering - but in terms of "feel", the N54 always felt stronger than the N55, and I have had both.

the tuning issue is due to the lock down of the ecu! bmw only seems to be selling/ working with Dinan to get around it as you see they can lift the speed delimit, and flash the stock edu with no issues! again the Crank of the N54 is the only thing I've personally see that was forged with my own eyes not motor boating what others claims are.
Bms has a 435 pumping 414whp so correct me if I'm wrong but thats above 360bhp no?
