I always find this question to be funny. Spend a bunch of money on a car built by BMW and then there are still those who think some dude on the internet knows a better way of doing the break-in procedure than BMW does. Personally I see no logical reason to vary from a manufacture recommendation but there are some that have all kinds of theories of better ways none of which have much behind them except for theory. I am sure you can do just about anything to a new car off of the lot and get away with it at least in the short term but 1,200 miles of break in isn't exactly an eternity.
