I suspect that BMW doesn't really want to sell a bunch of M2s. The fact that it's a car that has received excellent reviews from people around the world is what's important for them. Now, with limited availability (via small numbers of cars, on allocation), limited colors and options, and somewhat downscale finishes, it looks more like BMW is using the M2 as 'bait', to drive sales for other models.

1) Need more interior space? M4
2) Need more back seat space and accessibility? M3
3) Need more upscale finishes inside? M3/M4/M5
4) Need more options, but the same price range? M240i
5) Need to lease rather than purchase? The entire BMW range except M2!
5) Can't wait many months for an allocation? The entire BMW range except M2!

And I think it has worked. I've seen many comments, on Bimmerpost and other forums, where prospective M2 purchasers have changed their decision, due to one of the above factors (or others not included) and ended up with an M3/M4, M240i, etc.
