I agree that this upgrade has been costly for BMW.

But it's solely because of their own stupidity. I've got an X1 manufactured in March 2015 that is in need of the upgrade. Who in their right mind would believe that a 2G-only based system was an appropriate technology choice in 2015 - when LTE was already well-established?

When you make stupid decisions you deserve to be penalized. Whether or not one actually uses this system should not be a factor in its upgrade. A future buyer of the vehicle might want it, and without it your car will be worth less. With technology on the march, perhaps much less.
